A 2022 review examined the growing body of research on cannabis-derived compounds and their potential role in skin health. The authors found that cannabinoids such as CBD and THC interact with the skin’s endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate inflammation, immune activity, skin cell growth, and barrier function. Because many skin disorders are linked to disruptions in these processes, cannabinoids have become an area of interest in dermatology research.
The review discussed studies involving conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, contact dermatitis, and chronic itch. Across multiple laboratory and preclinical studies, cannabinoids demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects and appeared to influence biological pathways involved in skin irritation, excessive immune responses, and abnormal skin cell growth. Researchers also noted that topical cannabinoid products may offer a targeted approach by acting directly on affected areas of the skin.
The authors concluded that cannabinoids have potential as future treatments for inflammatory skin conditions, but emphasized that additional human clinical trials are needed to confirm their effectiveness and determine optimal formulations and dosing. While more research is required, current findings suggest cannabinoids may play an important role in supporting skin health through their effects on inflammation and immune regulation.
