Cannabigerol (CBG) Shows Neuroprotective Effects After Ischemic Brain Injury in Animal Study (pub. Aug 2025)

Stroke and other forms of cerebral ischemia occur when blood flow to the brain is temporarily reduced, depriving neurons of oxygen and nutrients and often leading to memory loss, inflammation, and long-term brain damage. In this study, researchers investigated whether cannabigerol (CBG)—a non-intoxicating cannabinoid found in hemp—could help protect the brain following transient global cerebral ischemia in mice. Scientists evaluated memory performance, neuronal survival, inflammation levels, and markers of brain plasticity after inducing ischemic injury. (PubMed)

The results showed that CBG treatment reduced memory impairments, particularly in spatial memory tests that rely on healthy hippocampal function. Mice receiving CBG experienced less neuronal loss in vulnerable brain regions and showed improvements in markers linked to neuronal growth and plasticity. Researchers also observed reduced activation of inflammatory brain cells, suggesting that CBG helped limit neuroinflammation, a major contributor to ongoing brain damage after ischemic events. These combined effects point to CBG supporting both structural protection of neurons and functional recovery mechanisms. (PubMed)

Although the findings come from an animal model rather than human clinical trials, the study provides early evidence that CBG may act as a neuroprotective compound by reducing inflammation and promoting brain repair processes after ischemic injury. The authors emphasize that further research, including human studies, is needed to determine whether similar benefits could translate to stroke recovery or other neurological conditions involving reduced blood flow to the brain.
