CBD and Other Cannabinoids Show Antibacterial Activity Against Drug-Resistant Enterococcus Strain (pub. Jan 2026)

As antibiotic resistance continues to grow worldwide, researchers are exploring plant-derived compounds as potential new antibacterial tools. This pilot study investigated whether cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinoid-based preparations could inhibit clinical strains of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, two bacteria commonly associated with hospital-acquired infections and known for developing resistance to conventional antibiotics. Scientists compared purified CBD and highly concentrated CBD crystal formulations against 20 clinical bacterial isolates to evaluate antimicrobial effectiveness. (PMC)

The study found that CBD demonstrated strong antibacterial activity across nearly all tested strains. Both CBD preparations produced very low minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values—often at or below 1 µg/mL—indicating that only small amounts were needed to stop bacterial growth. Researchers also observed that CBD tended to be more effective against E. faecium than E. faecalis, suggesting differences in bacterial metabolism may influence susceptibility. Higher concentrations of CBD consistently produced stronger antibacterial effects, reinforcing the compound’s direct antimicrobial potential. (PMC)

Overall, the findings support growing scientific interest in cannabinoids as possible alternative antibacterial agents, particularly against Gram-positive bacteria that are becoming harder to treat with existing antibiotics. Because this research was conducted in laboratory conditions rather than clinical patients, the authors emphasize that additional studies—including animal and human trials—are needed to better understand mechanisms of action, safety, and potential medical applications.
