Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition of the colon that can cause abdominal pain, tissue damage, and long-term digestive issues. In this study, researchers investigated whether a hemp extract rich in cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG) could reduce symptoms of colitis using a well-established mouse model. The extract was administered both orally and by injection to evaluate its effects on inflammation, tissue health, and pain-related responses.
The results showed that treatment with the CBD/CBG extract significantly reduced inflammation and damage to the colon lining, helping preserve the structure of the intestinal tissue. Mice receiving the cannabinoid treatment also showed lower disease activity scores and reduced pain-related behaviors, suggesting an improvement in both physical damage and symptom severity. Notably, oral administration was found to be similarly effective to other delivery methods, indicating potential for practical use.
Overall, the study suggests that combined CBD and CBG extracts may help support inflammatory balance, tissue protection, and pain reduction in ulcerative colitis under experimental conditions. However, because the research was conducted in animal models, further clinical studies in humans are needed to determine safety, dosing, and real-world effectiveness.
