As antibiotic resistance continues to grow worldwide, researchers are exploring plant-derived compounds as potential new antibacterial tools. This pilot study investigated whether cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinoid-based preparations could inhibit clinical strains of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, two bacteria commonly associated with hospital-acquired infections and known for developing resistance to conventional antibiotics. The study found that CBD demonstrated strong antibacterial activity across nearly all tested strains. Both CBD preparations produced very low minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values—often at or below 1 µg/mL—indicating that only small amounts were needed to stop bacterial growth. Researchers also observed that CBD tended to be more effective against E. faecium than E. faecalis, suggesting differences in bacterial metabolism may influence susceptibility.
