Understanding the Endocannabinoid System: Why It Matters

On September 28, 2025, President Trump shared a video discussing the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) and how hemp-derived cannabinoids may interact with it. The now-viral video has attracted much needed widespread attention. It provides valuable information for anyone interested in learning more about the basic biology behind these compounds and how they function in the body.

The ECS is a biological system discovered in the 1990s. It is often described as a “conductor” which helps coordinate different systems in the body—such as the nervous, digestive, immune, and cardiovascular systems—to work in harmony.
Key components of the ECS include:

  • Endocannabinoids (naturally produced by the body)

  • Receptors (found throughout the body)

  • Enzymes that help break down or recycle the endocannabinoids

Although research is still evolving, the general idea is that the ECS helps maintain “homeostasis” — keeping the body’s internal environment stable even as external conditions change.

In the video, it’s suggested that as we age the body’s ECS may become less efficient, and that could be one of the reasons major systems (like sleep, mood, immune function) might find it harder to operate smoothly.
In short: if the ECS is weaker, the “orchestra” may not play in perfect synchrony any more.
