As a Veteran, I’m well acquainted with the hardships that follow service — the physical pain, the sleepless nights, and the emotional toll that touches not just me, but everyone around me. I’ve always leaned on my faith, trusting that God never gives us more than we can handle. Still, there are days when it feels like He must think I’m Superman. Days when the pain seems to have no purpose.
One afternoon at my local VA clinic, I saw an ad for Guitars For Vets playing on the waiting room monitor. I’d played a little guitar as a kid — my brother’s guitar — but the guitar went with him when he went off chasing after his medical career. With time, I lost both access to the instrument and the ability to play it. That day, something inside me said, Why not try again? I signed up. And that simple decision became the beginning of a journey I never could have imagined — one of self-discovery, achievement, connection, and healing.
I was paired with Deb, a wonderfully patient acoustic guitar teacher who guided me through the basics and helped me take my confidence to soaring heights. My fingers ached as I built calluses and practiced chords. But this pain was different. It had a rhythm and a purpose. Music gave me something my doctors couldn’t prescribe — progress I could feel, hope I could hear, and a newfound pride I could share.
For years, I’d welded myself into what I call the “Aching Disabled Veteran cocoon.” But through music, I broke free. My pain became part of something beautiful — something that connected me back to life. I’ve always said, “Pain is my friend. It lets me know I’m alive!”. Now I can say with a glad heart that pain is still my friend, but now it helps me fly away from it all, one song at a time. Now, my friends and family see me not just as a Veteran, but as someone rediscovering joy, strengthening my faith, and renewing my purpose.
Founded in 2007, Guitars For Vets (G4V) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that uses the power of music to help Veterans heal from trauma, PTSD, and the invisible wounds of war. What started as a friendship between a Vietnam-era Marine and a guitar instructor has grown into a nationwide movement that has changed the lives of over 15,000 Veterans.
Here’s how it works:
Free Guitar Lessons: Veterans receive 10 private, one-on-one lessons with a trained instructor — in person or online.
A New Guitar Package: After completing the program, every participant is gifted a brand-new acoustic guitar and an accessory kit (gig bag, strap, tuner, and more).
Community Jam Sessions: Local chapters and online “Cyber Chapters” provide safe, welcoming spaces for Veterans to share music, stories, and support.
Nationwide Reach: With over 100 chapters across the U.S., G4V ensures that every Veteran has access to music therapy and camaraderie, no matter where they live.
