Cannabidiol (CBD) and Neurodegeneration: What Research Says About Brain Health Support (pub. July 2024)

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, multiple sclerosis, and ALS involve the progressive loss of neurons, leading to declines in memory, movement, and overall brain function. These conditions are linked to factors like aging, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and abnormal protein buildup in the brain. Traditional treatments often provide only short‑term symptom relief and do not address the underlying causes of neuron damage. Because of this, scientists are exploring cannabidiol (CBD)—a non‑psychoactive compound from the Cannabis sativa plant—as a potential supportive option for neurological health due to its unique biological actions. CBD has been shown in laboratory and animal studies to have antioxidant, anti‑inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects, which may help limit the processes that contribute to nerve cell damage. These mechanisms include reducing harmful free radicals, calming excessive inflammation in brain tissues, and interfering with harmful protein clumps that can form in neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, early research suggests CBD may support neurological function in other disorders such as epilepsy, mood disorders, and anxiety, and may complement existing treatments. However, most of the evidence so far comes from preclinical and early clinical studies, and further research—especially well‑controlled human trials—is needed to better understand how CBD might influence neurodegenerative conditions and cognitive health.
